MIRTES ZWIERZYNSKI – 2011 3Arts Awardee (teaching artist)
Mural Commission for LIUNA
Mirtes directed the creation of a public mural commission in Millennium Park organized by After School Matters in collaboration with 45 Chicago teens. The mural honors the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA). A celebration of the finished mural takes place August 8 (open to public).

Explode Queer Dance: Midwest
Martine is co-curating this festival of queer dance in the Midwest, which runs concurrently with the annual conference of the Dance Studies Association.

NEJLA YATKIN – 2012 3Arts Awardee (choreographer)
Moving Nature Dreams
Nejla leads a free outdoor movement workshop as part of her continuing series to activate Chicago parks and help participants explore interactions between people, their movement, and the natural environment. Participants will be guided through a process harnessing multiple practices including; Reiki, Feldenkrais, physical theater exercises, and contemporary dance.

ALEXANDRIA EREGBU – 2016 3Arts/Allstate Awardee (visual/teaching artist)
Envisioning Justice
Alexandria curated the companion exhibition of new, commissioned works for Envisioning Justice, a two-year Illinois Humanities initiative that fosters citywide conversations about over-incarceration and strategies that lessen the impact of it. As part of the project, seven local artists are paired within seven Envisioning Justice hubs in communities most affected by over-incarceration. The artists’ work, inspired by activities at the hubs, is featured in the exhibition, which opens August 6 (reception Aug 17, see below) and runs through October 12.

Tuesday on the Terrace
Ben performs two sets of his “genre-defying sounds” at this free outdoor music series at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.

GINGER LANE – 2017 3Arts Community Awardee (choreographer)
SummerDance Celebration – The Grand Finale!
Ginger will be performing her new work, Flow, which was developed with support from a 3Arts/UIC Fellowship, as part of this grand finale of Chicago’s SummerDance series. Today’s program is a showcase of artists and dance works from Momenta Dance.

MARCELA MUNOZ – 2017 3Arts/Southwest Airlines Awardee (actor/director)
La Gala
As artistic director of Aguijon Theater, Marcela is co-organizing La Gala, celebrating the company’s 30th anniversary. Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Nilo Cruz will be a special guest speaker.

BEN LAMAR GAY – 2018 3Arts/Stan Lipkin & Evelyn Appell Lipkin Awardee (musician)
MCA New Works Initiative: Thurman Barker & Ben LaMar Gay
Ben shares a double bill on MCA’s stage to premiere a new work called Hecky Naw! Angles! exploring the shapes and sounds of Chicago’s social dances. Also performing is percussionist Thurman Barker, paying homage to his early days in Chicago’s jazz scene.
