RIVA LEHRER (2008 3Arts/Chandler Family Awardee)

Riva is a featured interviewee on the podcast Chinwag for their “On Disability & Monsters” episode. In this installment, the co-hosts speak to Riva about the nuances of living with a disability, stigma, defining beauty, and the complexities of human interactions. Riva shares the importance of representation and the burden of standing out in a world that often overlooks diversity.

 

JUAN ANGEL CHAVEZ (2008 3Arts/Northern Trust Awardee)

Now through August 17, Juan presents new work in the group exhibition, Making Time, on view at Secrist | Beach Gallery in Chicago. Curated by artist Stephen Eichhorn, the exhibition features 17 artists whose works “represent a variety of philosophical and metaphorical ideas about how objects exist within and interact with the framework of time.”

 

ANDREA CARLSON (2020 Make a Wave Awardee)

Opening August 3 (and on view through February 2, 2025), the Museum of Contemporary Art presents Chicago Works | Andrea Carlson: Shimmer on Horizons. The solo exhibition features video, painting, and sculpture works centering imagined landscapes of horizons. Works are “densely layered with an abundance of motifs, making reference to the tactics of colonialism as well as her family and peers, Ojibwe culture, and Indigenous sovereignty.” 

 

DAMON LOCKS (2019 3Arts/Reva & David Logan Foundation Awardee)

On August 9 (6-8pm CT), Damon will hold a listening party for his new solo record entitled 3D Sonic Adventure. The record will be released officially on August 23 (vinyl only), and features Damon’s sample-based electronic work. This preview listening party will take place at International Anthem. 

 

DEE ALEXANDER (2012 3Arts/Southwest Airlines Awardee)

On August 11, Dee presents the Dee Alexander Quartet at the Jazz Showcase with an evening of performance that honors Charlie Parker. 

 

JUSTIN DILLARD (2021 Make a Wave Awardee)

On August 13, Justin leads a band called The Aggregation as part of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago’s “Tuesdays on the Terrace” summer concert series. 

 

ALANA ARENAS (2008 3Arts Awardee)

On August 14, Season 3 of David Makes Man premieres on the OWN network. Oprah recently interviewed Alana who plays David’s hard working single mother Gloria in the upcoming season. 

 

RAE CHARDONNAY (2017 Make a Wave Awardee)

On August 16, Rae presents an iteration of her 3AP-funded project, Order of Service, performed at Steppenwolf Theatre Company for their LookOut series. “Order of Service is a personal and universal ode to an ancestral legacy in which sound and sacred space are tools for healing. This performance contemplates the complexities between the sacred and the secular using sound design, film and structural installation.”

 

MEAGAN MCNEAL (2020 3Arts/Walder Foundation Awardee)

On August 17, Meagan performs at City Winery. The R&B and Jazz vocalist recently released her latest album, Greenhouse

 

SANDRA DELGADO (2018 3Arts/Community Awardee) and CHERYL LYNN BRUCE (2010 3Arts Awardee)

On August 23, Collaboraction and Teatro Vista present the return of Sandra Delgado’s La Havana Madrid at Millennium Park, directed by fellow awardee, Cheryl Lynn Bruce. La Havana Madrid brings “back to life the eponymous 1960’s Lakeview nightclub, where Latine immigrants new to Chicago found refuge to gather, sing, dance, find love and discover their destinies…” This will be a staged concert version of the smash hit play, recreating a special place and time in Chicago’s history. 

 

MIGUEL DE LA CERNA (2021 Make a Wave Awardee), MAI SUGIMOTO (2021 Make a Wave Artist), and TOMEKA REID (2016 3Arts/Southwest Airlines Awardee)

From August 29 through September 1,  The Miguel de la Cerna Quartet, Mai Sugimoto, and Tomeka Reid Quartet will play at the Chicago Jazz Festival. Occurring at multiple sites in downtown Chicago, the Chicago Jazz Festival is a celebration of Chicago’s local jazz talents through free, high-quality music programming.
