In memoriam (September 25, 1992 - December 21, 2022):
Rooted on the West side of Chicago, Jon Veal has forged a collaborative transdisciplinary practice that is informed by his relationships, meaning that the community and spaces that they reside in often dictates the work and what form it takes. To understand one part is to understand all parts. Primarily focused on the capacity of symbolic gesture as a means of strategy, he uses his artistic agency as a platform for social engagement and discourse. In collaboration with artists Jordan Campbell, Jon is also the co-founder and creative director of alt_, an artist-led nonprofit based in Chicago that is dedicated to revitalizing communities through art and culture and providing an alternative to the narrative. alt_ was incepted in response to the trauma of their communities and the belief that art could be used as a tool for revolution.
