Kia Smith is a choreographer, director, educator, and organizer born and raised in Chicago. She is the founding Executive Artistic Director of the South Chicago Dance Theatre, the company’s Resident Choreographer, and founder of their Choreographic Diplomacy program. Kia is currently a recipient of The Ann & Weston Hicks Choreographic Fellowship at Jacob’s Pillow.

Selected past credits include working with Nike, Chicago Opera Theatre, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, actor Jack Black, world-renowned visual artists Manuel Mendive and Nick Cave, Loving the Silent Tears original musical (director Vincent Patterson), the Afterword film (director Catherine Sullivan), saxophonist/composer Ernest Dawkins, South Shore Opera Company, Chicago Fringe Opera, HBO, D-Composed string quartet, cellist Lilianna Zofia Wosko, and South Korea’s Choomna Art Center. Her work has been presented at Harvest Chicago Contemporary Dance Festival, Kennedy King College, Englewood Jazz Festival, Sons D’hiver Jazz Festival (Paris, France), Chicago Home Theatre Festival, the Jacob Caruthers Center for Inner City Studies, Young Auditorium (Whitewater, Wisconsin), the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Madison Ballet
