LANI MONTREAL (2009 3Arts Residency Artist)
From May 3 – 18, Lani’s newest play, Panther in the Sky, premieres at the Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble, under the direction of Mignon McPherson Stewart. Lani started writing this play while on a 3Arts Residency at Ragdale and is pleased to bring it to the Chicago stage now. This is a new play “about mothers who lost their sons to gun violence and the sons who watch over them, guiding them to action.”
REGINA HARRIS BAIOCCHI (2011 3Arts Awardee)
On May 4, Regina’s music will be performed as part of a concert entitled “Grande Dames of the Chicago Black Renaissance,” presented by the Michael Teolis Singers. The concert will take place at 7:30pm CT at First United Methodist Church of Oak Park.
LAUREN DEUTSCH (2017 Make a Wave Awardee)
On May 9-10, Lauren presents her 3AP-funded Tangible Sound: Immersions project in the galleries of Asian Improv Arts Midwest (AIRMW). A two-day multi-projection installation, Tangible Sound is a sensory, multimedia exhibition experience of moving sound pictures that reflect the energy, patterns, and colors of creative improvised music. The installation will also feature live music by Tatsu Aoki & Edward Wilkerson Jr. Audiences are encouraged to visit the installation during open hours (5:00pm – 8:30pm CT) on May 9 & 10.
TARA MALLEN (2017 3Arts/William Franklin Grisham Awardee) and KELLY O’SULLIVAN (2017 Make A Wave Awardee)
On May 9, as part of the Chicago Critics Film Festival, Ghostlight will premiere at the Music Box Theater. Following a critically acclaimed debut at Sundance, the film is directed by Kelly and stars Tara along with her husband Keith Kupferer and their daughter, Katherine Mallen Kupferer. “When a construction worker unexpectedly joins a local theater's production of Romeo and Juliet, the drama onstage starts to mirror his own life.” An extended run of the film may return in June, stay tuned!
RIVA LEHRER (2008 3Arts/Chandler Family Awardee)
On May 11, Riva discusses the work of artist Christina Ramberg in a lecture entitled “Body Partings” at the Art Institute of Chicago on the occasion of Christina Ramberg: A Retrospective, on view at the museum through August 11. The lecture focuses on “Ramberg’s artistic production through the lenses of disability activism, gender queerness, monster theory, and the creative process.”
LYNNE JORDAN (2021 Make a Wave Artist)
On May 16, Lynne presents a night of song tributes to Nina Simone, in a one-night performance with her band, The Shivers, live at the City Winery.
TOMEKA REID (2016 3Arts/Southwest Airlines Awardee) and JUNIUS PAUL (2020 3Arts/SIF Fund at The Chicago Community Foundation Awardee)
On May 17-19, Tomeka presents the 10th anniversary of the Chicago Jazz String Summit with three nights of performances. On May 17, Dorothy Carlos, Doyeon Kim, Tomas Fujiwara, Yacouba Sissoko, and Moussa Diabate will perform at Constellation. On May 18, Tomeka, Regina Carter, Junius Paul, Janel Leppin, Brian Settles, Chad Taylor, and Joanna Mattrey perform at the Logan Center for the Arts. On May 19, at Hungry Brain, Chicago Jazz String Summit presents an improv session featuring current and past Chicago Jazz String Summit participants.
DEE ALEXANDER (2012 3Arts/Southwest Airlines Awardee)
On May 19, Dee performs in Nina at Ninety: A Tribute to Nina Simone with Dee Alexander. Dee joins the Chicago Jazz Orchestra in an evening length tribute to Nina Simone on the 91st anniversary of her birth.
BETHANY THOMAS (2019 3Arts/Restoration Hardware Awardee) and DARLING SHEAR SQUIRE (2017 3Arts Make a Wave Awardee)
On May 22-24, Bethany has a three-night engagement at Constellation as she embodies the many identities of the iconic Lou Reed. “Backed by a six-piece band and featuring movement by Darling, Bethany invites us into her own take on the seminal rock album, Transformer. Step into an intimate, red-lit fantasy of the 1970s' underground music scene and become a part of the story.”
WINIFRED HAUN (2022 3Arts/Walder Foundation Awardee) and SARITA SMITH CHILDS (2022 3Arts/Stan Lipkin & Evelyn Appell Lipkin Awardee)
On May 24-25, Winifred Haun Dance & Dancers present Persistent Spring, a performance concert that celebrates the 3RD Coast Contemporary Dance training program for emerging dancers, a collaboration with Chicago Movement Collective. The cohort of dancers will perform new works and excerpts choreographed by Sarita Smith Childs, Winifred, and others. This performance will take place at the Ruth Page Center.
STEPHANIE MARTINEZ (2015 3Arts/Restoration Hardware Awardee)
On May 24-25, Stephanie’s Para.Mar Dance Theatre presents Monolith, a new evening of dance performances featuring world premieres from Beatriz Garciá Diáz, Xavier Nuñez, Bryan Diaz Arias, and Stephanie Martinez. The shows will take place at Epiphany Center for the Arts.
